CLAY DEMOS

These are not lesson plans but approaches to media, techniques and processes in a TAB classroom.
These can be covered in a five minute whole-group instruction called the “demonstration.”

There are several “plastic” sculptural media for centers that can be changed and molded with the hands and tools.

Pottery clay
Air-dry clay
Plasticene or modeling clay
Home made or purchased “play dough”

The best tools are the students’ fingers!
Other tools:

Clay tools
Sticks and old pencils
Kitchen tools, such as garlic presses and pasta tools
Rolling pins or hard cardboard tubes
Combs
Toothbrushes for scoring
Fabric and other textured material

Important skills:

Rolling ball
Scoring and attaching
Wedging
Hollowing thick shape
Rolling coils
Slab-building
Smoothing cracks and edges
Adding decorative textures

Clay objects can include both sculptures and functional containers. Surface decoration for bisque fired clay
can be completed with watercolor, permanent marker and acrylic paint if glazing is not possible.
